Montpellier Arcade, Cheltenham

50 x 60 cm, acrylic on canvas. This picture shows the outdoor area at the end of the Montpellier Arcade, Cheltenham. One of the earliest shopping arcades, it was designed by RW and C Jearrad and built in 1831-32 with modifications to the ground floor windows in the C19th and C20th. In 1850 G Rowe described it as “although not extensive, yet presents a pleasing coup d’oeil from the upper entrance. It is furnished with shops and lighted by a glazed roof.”

The Arcades Project – this has pictures of the arcade and tales of its colourful past. The Project as a whole is worth a look if you like an arcade (as I do).

The Arcade is Grade II* listed.
