Ashness Bridge, Derwentwater, England. Skiddaw (931 metres) in the background. Acrylic, 29.7 x 21 cm.
This painting was based on a 1951 postcard to my Uncle Peter, who at the time was in his thirties, married, and living in Sussex. The card is from his mother, who signs herself ‘Mother’ and only at the end says ‘hope Mary [Peter’s wife] is well’ rather than sending the card to both of them – maybe they didn’t get on. ‘Mother’ is in the company of someone else, presumably her husband but then again why not ‘from Father and Mother’ or whatever, and John, which is her other son, who I probably only met once or twice as he lived much of his life in Hong Kong.
