Old Barn, Shurdington – watercolour

Just over A4 size, watercolour. This painting was based on the photograph to the right here: which I took in April 2021 on a walk from Hatherley to Shurdington. Shortly after the photo was taken this atmospheric old structure was demolished.

First I drew the outline in pencil then went over it in fineliner marker – at which point it looked like a book illustration. Then did a watercolour over the top of that. The sky is better than I’ve done previously as it was more dabbed at than straight lines.

I was reasonably happy with the painting except I felt it was restricted to a green/orange colour palette I’ve used recently. There is more tonal range than I’ve used in the past, which is a good thing. A few days after doing this picture I went on a watercolour painting workshop which may have changed the way I do watercolours entirely; and a valuable piece of advice there was that I use enough water but insufficient pigment. Diolch yn fawr, Peter!
